Beaming wide. Puerto Rico is in trouble. Approximately 3 million of its residents are still without electricity after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria, and 30% lack access to drinkable water. Exacerbating the process of recovery is the fact that communication infrastructure in general, and the internet specifically, is experiencing trouble across the U.S. territory. Enter Alphabet's Project Loon, which on October 20 announced that it had officially switched on its balloon-powered internet for some Puerto Rican residents. That's right giant balloons are providing digital connectivity for some people who might otherwise go without. "Working with AT&T, Project Loon is now supporting basic communication and internet activities like sending text messages and accessing information online for some people with LTE enabled phones," explains the company in a blog post. "This is the first time we have used our new machine learning powered algorithms to keep balloons clustered over Puerto Rico, so we’re still learning how best to do this. As we get more familiar with the constantly shifting winds in this region, we hope to keep the balloons over areas where connectivity is needed for as long as possible." MARS' ATMOSPHERE

About 80-90 percent of Mars' atmosphere has been stripped away by solar wind, according to Jim Green, NASA’s Planetary Science Division Director. The planet loses about 1.3 kilograms per second of ‘important oxygen.’ The rest is made up of: Carbon dioxide: 95.9% Argon: 2.0% Nitrogen: 1.9% Oxygen: 0.14% Carbon monoxide: 0.06%
‘We found that Mars’ magnetic tail, or magnetotail, is unique in the solar system,’ said project scientist Gina DiBraccio of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. ‘It’s not like the magnetotail found at Venus, a planet with no magnetic field of its own, no is it like Earth’s which is surrounded by its own internally generated magnetic field. ‘Instead, it is a hybrid between the two.’ According to the experts, the twisting is likely due to a process known as ‘magnetic reconnection.’ While Mars lost its global magnetic field billions of years ago, certain parts of the surface still contain ‘fossil’ magnetic fields left behind. The study found Mars magnetotail is formed by magnetic reconnection as the magnetic fields from solar wind join with these remnant magnetic fields in the surface. But, this same process may send some of Mars’ thin atmosphere flying out to space.   As Mars’ upper atmosphere contains electrically charged particles (ions), which flow along magnetic field lines, the reconnection process forms a ‘pathway to space’ for them, through the magnetotail. The process also releases energy, much like a stretched rubber band snapping into place. ‘Our model predicted that magnetic reconnection will cause the Martian magnetotail to twist 45 degrees from what’s expected based on the direction of the magnetic field carried by the solar wind,’ said DiBraccio.

‘When we compared those predictions to MAVEN data on the directions of the Martian and soalr wind magnetic fields, they were in very good agreement.’ The MAVEN spacecraft is orbiting Mars to help scientists better understand how the planet lost its atmosphere and water. The new findings, revealed during a briefing at the 49th annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Planetary Sciences in Utah add further insight to the complex workings of the Martian environment. ‘Mars is really complicated but really interesting at the same time,’ said DiBraccio. The researchers will examine additional data collected by other instruments on the spacecraft to see if the escaping particles line up with their expectations of the reconnecting magnetic fields, and their contribution to atmospheric loss. THE BE-4 ENGINE

The BE-4 produces up to 550,000lbs of thrust. That makes it the most powerful rocket built in the last twenty years. SpaceX's Merlin engine can deliver 190,000lbs and their planned Raptor engine will provide 380,000lbs. It is fuelled by liquid natural gas, as opposed to the various kerosene-based hydrocarbon fuels normally used in the aerospace industry for rockets and jet engines. The technology has the benefit of being reusable and developed with private funding. This makes it attractive to governments, as less taxpayer investment is needed to develop future space programs. If successful, it could also end US reliance on Russian-built rockets. The BE-4 is rumoured to be the engine of choice for the US government's new Vulcan rocket, under development since 2014.

This seemed to be confirmed when in May, an engine powerpack exploded on its test stand at the Texas base. The successful test suggests that Blue Origin is back on track, and has moved forward in developing a new full engine. Writing on Twitter, a company spokesman said: 'First hotfire of our BE-4 engine is a success.' The BE-4 engine will be used on Blue Origin's orbital rocket New Glenn, which the firm hopes will launch into space in the early 2020s The first flight of the reusable rocket is planned for 2021, though no official date has been set yet. It is the big brother of the New Shephard rocket being created by the firm to provide space tourism flights. New Glenn will be powered by seven of the BE-4 engines. The 270-feet tall rocket will be able to lift a 45 ton (40 tonne) payload into low orbit or 12 tons (11.7 tonnes) into geo-stationary orbit. The BE-4 is rumoured to be the engine of choice for the US government's new Vulcan rocket, under development since 2014. The reusable rocket will be able to land on a drone ship, and is expected to blast off in 2021 with France's Eutelsat Communications SA as its first customer, Bezos said. Each stage lifts off with 3.85 million pounds of thrust from seven BE-4 engines. A single vacuum-optimized BE-3 engine, burning liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, will power New Glenn's third stage. However, the booster and the second stage are identical in both variants. Blue Origin plans to fly New Glen by the end of the decade from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
  Like New Shepard, the New Glenn booster is designed to fly itself back to Earth so it can be recovered and re-flown, slashing launch costs. Blue Origin's suborbital New Shepard launch system consists of a rocket and capsule designed to fly payloads and passengers to about 62 miles (100 km) above the planet. The two vehicles launch together, accelerating for approximately two and a half minutes, before the engine cuts off. The capsule then separates from the booster to coast quietly into space. After a few minutes of free fall, the booster performs an autonomous rocket-powered vertical landing, while the capsule lands softly under parachutes, both ready to be used again. The company has not yet set a price for rides.

THE BATTLE OF THE BILLIONAIRES

Blue Origin will go up against space firms from Elon Musk and Richard Branson with its plans to launch cargo and people into space. Musk's SpaceX is the most advanced of the firms, and already has several satellite launches - and failures - under its belt. Its Dragon capsule was due to begin ferrying astronauts to the International Space station in 2018, although a delayed date has not been confirmed.

Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic will focus on both tourist trips and launching cargo, and recently unveiled an upgraded booster to launch satellites. Richard Branson has confirmed plans to launch people into space in 2018, with the first test flights beginning this year. Already 500 potential customers have reserved a spot on one of his trips at a cost of $250,000 (£200,000) each. In a new interview, Branson said that Virgin Galactic will start performing powered tests of its SpaceShipTwo craft every three weeks, with plans to extend them into space by November or December. And after his own flight, full commercial passenger operations will start by the end of 2018, he said. Currently, Blue origins and Virgin Galactic plan on entering space close to the boundary with Earth at approximately 329,839 feet (101km). But Space X's re-useable rockets have loftier plans to stay in orbit, which requires more fuel and power.

The new tunnel will be a 10.3-mile route that undercuts a state-owned operation of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Maryland, and could eventually become the anchor point for a network that would span Washington to New York, with stops in-between at urban centers in Baltimore and Philadelphia, according to the LA Times. The Boring Company, Musk’s tunnel-digger operation, is gaining steam with a second boring machine ready to come online and start chewing away at the Earth. Maryland has offered Musk a conditional permit so he can start operations, though it’s not providing any financial support to the project at this sage. It’s probably not a huge risk on Maryland’s part, given the limited scope of the initial project — and if this works out, they can always turn the site into a tourist attraction for the start of the world-famous underground hyperloop network.
Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn told the LA Times that the tunnel really wasn’t any different from the various utility access points that it provides permits for all the time, so it wasn’t that complicated from a permitting perspective. Still, there’s a lot of red tape left to cut through to make a cross-state underground hyperloop an actual reality. According to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is still facing supply chain constraints for the upcoming iPhone X. The company will have around 2 to 3 million units before the launch on November 3rd, which shouldn’t be enough to meet demand. While Apple didn’t disclose exact numbers for first-weekend sales last year, the company sold 13 million iPhone 6s units during the first weekend, 10 millioniPhone 6 units and 9 million iPhone 5s/5c units. The iPhone 8 is already available, which could mitigate demand for the iPhone X, but it sounds like many buyers will be disappointed by Apple’s initial stock. In many ways, the iPhone X packs more innovative components than your average new iPhone. Apple usually adds cutting-edge components when its suppliers can produce tens of millions of them. But multiple parts of the iPhone X are generating supply chain issues. According to KGI Securities, Apple now uses a flexible printed circuit board for the antenna. This is not your average circuit board, so Apple has had issues finding suppliers that can produce those components at scale. Murata was supposed to be the main supplier for this part, but it sounds like the company can’t meet Apple’s strong requirements. Since then, Apple has found a new supplier, which created some delays. On the camera front, Apple is using a different circuit board for each sensor. Other phone makers only use one circuit board. This custom design has also been a challenge.
Finally, the iPhone X features a ton of sensors on the front of the device. Apple has packed a tiny Kinect in the notch of the device. One component in particular projects a network of infrared dots to create a 3D map of your face based on the reflection of those dots. Apple has had issues finding a supplier that can produce enough dot projectors for the iPhone X. iPhone X pre-orders start on Friday, October 27th at midnight Pacific time. If you plan on getting the new phone, you shouldn’t delay your pre-order. Chances are that shipping estimations are going to slip to multiple weeks after just a few minutes. Production should ramp up in the coming weeks, but it sounds like it could take months before you can just walk into an Apple store and buy a new iPhone X. After journalist Quinn Norton recently published her Medium post accusing Scoble of grabbing her, NASA analyst Sarah Seitz said in the post’s comment section that Scoble had propositioned Seitz for an affair a year and a half ago — after he’d publicly stated that he was cleaning up his act. Seitz later told TechCrunch she’d turned Scoble down, but that he continued to pursue her anyway. Another woman who chose to remain anonymous told TechCrunch that Scoble made a pass at her, telling her how much he wanted to make out with her after getting high at a tech conference earlier this year. She said that Scoble later apologized for his behavior and lavished her with praise; he also connected her with people she needed to help further her career, which she said effectively silenced her.
“It made me sick to work with him, but also he was offering so much help,” she told TechCrunch. “As women we sometimes have to make tough choices. Do I want to call him out, or do I want to advance my career?” Scoble is in a position of power to many people in the tech industry — a point that has arisen repeatedly in our interviews with women in his sphere. His actions — both past and present — have been kept under wraps for that reason, they say. In fact, two additional women have told TechCrunch that Scoble was still making inappropriate advances after he’d publicly stated he was going sober,  but neither wanted to go on record for fear of the repercussions. Scoble has so far declined to answer numerous questions from TechCrunch about these allegations. He told TechCrunch yesterday that he would be doing a live stream to address the two women who’ve come forward about his past; that has yet to happen. Scoble also said he’d be sending a statement about more recent allegations but hasn’t done so as of this writing, though he now says it will come out this weekend. He may be waiting to do anything while he lets these allegations “play out,” according to an email he sent to Redesk exec Guy Pearson: Scoble has long been viewed as Silicon Valley’s favorite narcissist — someone so blatantly self-absorbed it has often verged on comedy. (Who can forget the image of a red, wet Scoble coming out of the shower in Google Glasses?) He’s also been helpful to both people and startups when they’ve sought out his attention. It seems unlikely now that his vast network will continue to view his brand of self-involvement as quite so comical now. Update: Minutes after publishing this article, Scoble has offered an apology for his past and recent behavior on his Facebook profile, saying, “I have damaged the trust many people had in me. I have made many steps in my life to try to improve, including getting sober more than two years ago. I have committed to making amends where appropriate and to living a life of transparency, integrity, and honesty.” Scoble did not address these recent allegations specifically, instead committing to proving himself through future behavior. 7 Types of Content Marketing Metrics Worth Tracking

内容营销 A marketing agent or CMO with detailed knowledge of data on his side is a tough act to beat in today’s world - especially if they know inside and out the idea of metrics, and how to follow them. Today, most know the basics of metric follow: leads and traffic and other such basic metrics. But there are other types, some more advanced and/or niche, which can help your marketing team immensely. The following content marketing metrics are organized into seven different types.

1. Consumption

  • Page views - This metric tells you which, and how many pages on your site users are frequenting most, which is a good indicator of what content is drawing people in most effectively.
  • Average time on page - As the name implies, this is a measurement of how long each user is staying on each page on your site. This is a good way of deducing how engaging your content is.
  • Unique visitors - This stat measures how many people, overall, are visiting your site, and how many of those people are repeat visitors.

2. Retention

  • Return rate - Measures how many customers you have that are regulars and which are new - good to know if you want to build a positive relationship with both.
  • Bounce rate - Measures the rate of entry and exit clicks happening on the same page.
  • Pages per visit - Tracks how many pages each visitor looks at every time they visit the site.

3. Sales

  • Pipeline generated - Aggregates the total dollar value of all opportunities where the lead’s first touch associated with those opportunities was with your content.
  • Pipeline touched - Measures and gathers all opportunities where the user “touched” a particular piece of content.
  • Revenue influenced - Observes the dollar value of revenue closed where the contact in question consumed your content before converting.

4. Engagement

  • Comments - Tracks the comments left on a particular post you make on your site. This is a good means of measuring user engagement.
  • Session duration - The length of time a user spends on your site across several pages.
  • Page depth - The number of pages a visitor clicks on per visit to your site.

5. Lead metrics

  • New leads generated - Using your CRM and marketing automation tool, you calculate how many new leads came into your database after they touched new content.
  • Touched existing leads - Again, making use of your marketing tool and your CRM, you can calculate how many existing leads in your database interact with a piece of content.

6. Sharing

  • Social media shares - Tracks what content on your site is most likely to be shared by users based on what’s been shared previously. A good metric of what content your consumers are interested in showing others.
  • Social media likes - Like the previous metric, you can use this metric to keep track of shared content since many social media sites like to display what content a user “likes” to their followers.
  • Email forwards - Although not every forwarded email can be measured and quantified, this can still be a very useful tool for measuring what emails got forwarded parallel another campaign.

7. Production/cost

  • Time to publish - Tracks how long it takes your team to publish a piece of content. More of an internal metric than marketing specifically, but knowing your team’s efficiency can greatly help how you market yourselves.
  • Content throughput - Pinpointing how much content you and your team produces over a given time can make for excellent marketing if that number reflects efficiency.
  • Content backlog - This measures how quickly your users are consuming your content, and can thus be a good indicator of how well you’ve been advertising your entire content log.
While not every metric listed above is necessarily a marketing metric, every single one of them ties back into marketing in some way. Being aware of these metrics can help your marketing team get a much tighter grip on marketing better to your customers. So remember these seven types of content marketing metrics, and implement them whenever you can.
